Somewhere, tucked behind a tangle of ivy and the soft hush of forgotten things, there is a gate.
It’s been there all along — half-hidden, a little mossy, wearing years of quiet like a coat. You may have walked past it a hundred times without noticing. But today, something makes you stop. A flicker. A feeling. The faintest whisper that something wonderful might be waiting just on the other side.
This month, we’re going to find that gate. And then — together — we’re going to open it. 🗝️
🎬 This Month’s Film: The Secret Garden (2020)
Once upon a time — well, 2020, but it feels very much like once upon a time — a film arrived that was made entirely of atmosphere and magic and the particular kind of beauty that only exists in places that have been left to grow a little wild.
Directed by Marc Munden and written by Jack Thorne, this dreamy retelling of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved classic follows young Mary Lennox — sharp-eyed, lonely, and altogether more interesting than anyone gives her credit for — as she arrives at her uncle’s grand and gloomy estate on the English moors. The halls are full of shadows and secrets. The wind outside has opinions. And somewhere, beyond a locked gate that everyone seems to have agreed to forget about, a garden has been sleeping.
Starring the wonderful Dixie Egerickx as Mary, the film glows with storybook color and a sense that the world is far more enchanted than it appears on the surface. It feels like stepping into a very old, very beautiful book — the kind where the illustrations seem to move when you’re not quite looking directly at them.
This is your week to watch it. Light a candle. Make something cozy to sip. A pretty mug, honey spoons, or a cozy drink mix can turn this into a tiny ceremony. Let yourself be carried away entirely. 🕯️
✨ Academy Note
Before you press play, a gentle note: this film touches on themes of grief, loneliness, and emotional healing. If you prefer to preview a film’s content ahead of time, you may wish to explore guides on sites like Common Sense Media or Does the Dog Die. As always, choose what feels right for you.
✨ This Week’s Activity: The Forgotten Garden Within
While the gate to Mary’s garden was locked, the garden didn’t give up. It didn’t decide it wasn’t worth growing anymore. It simply continued — quietly, stubbornly, beautifully — in its own wild and wonderful way, waiting for someone to remember it was there.
We have gardens like that, too, you know.
Somewhere inside you, there is something you loved as a child. Something that made the hours dissolve like sugar in warm tea. Maybe it was drawing fantastic creatures in the margins of everything. Maybe it was making up elaborate stories for your stuffed animals, or collecting treasures from outside that only you knew were treasures. Maybe it was dancing in the kitchen, or building entire cities out of whatever you could find, or losing yourself completely in a world of color and paint and happy, glorious mess.
And then, somewhere along the way — gently, gradually, the way fog rolls in — the gate closed. Life filled up with other things. Someone said something, or nothing was said at all, and you simply grew and moved on and left that little garden behind without quite meaning to.
But here’s the secret the film whispers, if you listen closely: nothing that is truly loved is ever really lost.
🌿 Your Journal Prompt for This Week:
What is your secret garden?
What did you adore as a child that has been quietly waiting, all this time, behind a locked gate?
Close your eyes for a moment. Walk down the old path. Find the gate. If you could peek through the keyhole right now, what would you see growing there?
Take all the time you need. Wander. Daydream a little before you write. The best gardens are never hurried, and neither are the best journal entries. 🌸
Next week, we’ll step through the gate together and see what’s waiting for us on the other side.
